Design Project #1 - Sachplakat Posters

Project Brief

The objective of this project was to select a person, place or thing and then render it in simple colored shapes without outlines.  The rendered image needed to be flat, visually reduced and edited down to its visual essence as an object, and could not show the artists expression.  The image was to be reduced to follow the example of Bernhard and his Sachplakat posters/ads.  The second part of the project was to juxtapose the image with a word.  We had to create two versions: one version with a word that identifies the object and a second version with a word that signifies the image and changes the meaning or interpretation of the object image.

My Sketches/Studied Images

Final Poster Version I

Word/Image Juxtaposition

Image: Vehicle (Jeep) + Word: Jeep (Identity) = The image is of a Jeep brand vehicle (signified meaning).

Image subjective meaning = To me, the Jeep vehicle is a tough, able, and fun vehicle.

Word subjective meaning = To me, Jeep brand vehicles are tough, able, and fun.

Final Poster Version II

Word/Image Juxtaposition

Image: Vehicle (Jeep) + Word: Freedom (the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance) = This Jeep vehicle allows one to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance

Image subjective meaning = To me, the Jeep vehicle is a tough, able, and fun vehicle.

Word subjective meaning = To me, freedom enables one to act according to ones own will.  It also is the ability to express oneself.

Juxtaposition informed associative meaning = Jeep vehicles give their owners the ability to act according to their wills and to express themselves.
