Design Theory S14 - Jeff
Design Project #5
Design Brief
The objective of this project is to design the packaging for a record. This record is for a band called Fall Out Boy and it will be their greatest hits record. The record packaging will be a gate fold design and the dimensions will be 12.5" x 12.5" to house the 12" vinyl record. Each side of the record can play 22 minutes of music which equals a total of 6 songs per side. Side A will play the following songs: My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark, Alone Together, Sugar We're Going Down, The Phoenix, Thnks fr th Mmrs, and Young Volcanoes. Side B will play Dance Dance, The Takeover the Breaks Over, I Don't Care, Grand Theft Autumn, This Ain't a Scene It's an Arms Race, and America's Suitehearts. The front cover will be a design representing the song "Alone Together." This project is to be designed in the Swiss Design style.
I started over and decided to design new record packaging for Macklemore's album Thrift Shop.

Reading #5
Historical
Contemporary
These two designs really connect. You can tell that this contemporary design was directly influenced by the Bauhaus, maybe even more specifically by the historical design above. They both have a clean, machined-look. They both are composed on the same diagonal axis and use solid shapes and typography to build the composition. The main colors of black and red are used in both design as well. The contemporary artist used a different typeface, but he used the Bauhaus font to further emphasis that style.
